"Loud pipes don't save lives..." training does.

Welcome back to Pit Stop. Usually this is where I interview a someone adjacent to the riding world that makes the sport great, and tell their story. Today the person in the chair is me, because I made a social post that said loud pipes don't save lives, training does, and a few of you came back swinging.

Fair.
So let's talk data, and yes I brought my sources.
"Loud pipes save lives" rests on one assumption: that the car about to ruin your day can hear you coming. Walk that back to where the sound is actually born and the assumption falls apart.
Your exhaust exits at the rear of the bike. The energy projects backward, away from your direction of travel. So the driver in front of you, the one most likely to pull out, turn left, or drift into your lane, sits in the one spot your pipes barely reach (FEMA Rider; RevZilla, Common Tread).
Now add the Doppler effect, because you've heard it your whole life without naming it. A fire truck climbs in pitch as it comes at you and drops the second it passes. Sound from an object moving toward you compresses to a higher pitch; moving away, it stretches lower. As you travel forward on your bike, the sound is launching rearward, and the practical result is that a driver perceives your bike loudest as you pass or after… never in the window where it would've stopped them from turning into you (RevZilla; BikeSAFE WA).
By the time they hear you, you're already in their door.
That's not opinion. A university sound study put six bikes against a car and measured when the exhaust actually became audible inside the cabin. Only the loudest of the six, a bike pushing 110 decibels, could be heard at all, and even then, only once the motorcycle's front wheel had pulled level with the car's rear wheel. By that point a driver mid-lane-change has no time left to abort (AdvRider, summarizing the research). A separate look found that even the loudest pipes were barely detectable from about 33 feet behind a passenger vehicle, and almost no fatal crash is a rear-ender at 33 feet (Hurt Report, via Rhodes Law).
Then there's the car itself. Modern cabins are acoustic glass, sealed doors, sound-deadening, a podcast, the AC, and three kids. Manufacturers spend real money engineering your noise out of that car. You're not beating that with a slip-on.
Emergency vehicles point their sirens forward, because the entire job of the siren is to warn what's ahead of them. We mount our noise at the back. We built the warning system backwards(FEMA Rider).
If the danger came from behind, loud pipes might have a point. It doesn't.
The most thorough crash study this country has ever produced is the Hurt Report, Professor Harry Hurt's team investigated over 900 wrecks on-scene in Los Angeles and dug through thousands more police reports (Wikipedia; Hurt Report, 1981). What they found about multi-vehicle crashes is the number you should tattoo somewhere useful:
Roughly 65% of multi-vehicle motorcycle crashes were the car driver's fault, and the classic version is a car turning left into an oncoming motorcycle.
In about two-thirds of those crashes, the driver violated the rider's right of way (Sam Bernstein Law Firm, summarizing Hurt).
The threat comes from the front and the side, the exact directions your rearward-firing pipes can't cover. No exhaust note has ever un-turned a left-turning Camry.
So the question stops being how do I get heard and becomes how do I see it coming and not be there when it arrives.
That's a skill. Skills are trained.
What the data actually says moves the needle
The riders crashing are overwhelmingly the untrained ones...
In the Hurt Report, about 92% of the crash-involved riders had no formal training, they were self-taught or learned from a friend (Sam Bernstein Law Firm, summarizing Hurt)
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation states plainly that the Hurt data showed trained riders were under-represented in crash fatalities (MSF, "About"). That's the foundation's own read of the evidence.
Bring it to right now: NHTSA's 2024 data shows 35% of motorcycle operators in fatal crashes were riding without a valid motorcycle license (NHTSA, 2024). A license endorsement is the floor of "I proved I can do this." A third of the people dying never cleared the floor.
You don't need a track license. You need time with a coach.
Entry point: MSF Basic RiderCourse. The MSF's whole reason for existing is that crash data kept pointing at inexperienced, untrained riders in their first months on a bike, so education became the lever (MSF, "About"). In a lot of states, passing it even waives your on-cycle license test. Start here if you're new.
Next level: Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic. This is the one I point experienced riders to. Total Control is the largest advanced-training provider in North America, built on national champion Lee Parks' curriculum, and it's used so heavily to cut crashes that the U.S. Marine Corps adopted it into its rider-safety program worldwide (Total Control Training; The American Legion, 2011). The Advanced Riding Clinic is a one-day, ~9-hour course on your own bike, throttle and brake control, vision, line selection, body position, and runs around $450 (2 Wheel Safety / Total Control). The whole thing tops out around 25 mph in a parking lot, which sounds slow right up until you realize 25 in a tight corner is very fast, and the skills scale straight to road speed.
Spend the money on the class. Spend it on the gear. Spend it on a better horn that actually faces forward if you want something to point at traffic. Just stop pretending the noise behind you is protecting the front of you.
